DETRITUS / Resources from Waste: Energy and Materials

We are proud to announce that a set of Special Issue of Detritus on “Resources from Waste: Energy and Materials” will be compiled, based on selected papers from SUM2020 and Venice 2020 Symposia. The topics of interest might include the following ones as detailed below and the journal is open to any additional suggestion:


  • Valorization of materials and resources (e.g. Sources and characterization of materials in urban areas (MSW, commercial waste, WEEE, municipal sewage sludge, construction and demolition waste, food waste, scrap tires / Automotive shredded residues treatment and reuse / Oil recovery, treatment and reuse / Water and wastewater reuse programs)
  • Technologies for the extraction of valuable materials
  • Landfill mining
  • Water and wastewater recovery technologies
  • Sewage sludge materials recovery
  • Biorefinery for material recovery
  • Critical Emerging issues in waste recycling (e.g. Fate of contaminants in recycling / Carbon and water footprint of material recycling / Urban mining: cost-benefit analysis / Waste and health / Digestate management and human health
  • Role of landfilling in Circular Economy
  • Circular Economy in textiles and apparel
  • Blue technologies for sustainable Circular Economy
  • Biomass and waste characterisation as a potential energy source (e.g. municipal and industrial waste, agricultural and horticultural waste, hazardous waste, clinical waste, shredded car light fractions ("car fluff”) etc., analytical and monitoring parameters)
  • Renewable fuel: biogas, biodiesel, bioethanol, liquified gas, etc. (e.g. Production processes / quality / technologies / handling and storage / residues management)
  • Biological waste to energy: anaerobic digestion, microbial fuel cell, biofuel (e.g. appropriate technologies for different organic substrates, processes, operation, gas treatment and utilization, treatment of residues (digestate, wastewater), analytical and monitoring parameters.
  • Refuse-derived fuel/solid recovered fuel - rdf/srf (e.g. characterisation and quality, production, handling and storage, thermal utilisation, co-combustion, residues)
  • Thermal treatment: combustion, pyrolysis, gasification and others (e.g. processes, energy utilization, technologies, efficiency, upgrading of existing plants, corrosion and operation problems, gas cleaning, ash treatment and utilization)
  • Low temperature conversion processes (e.g. torrefaction, hydrothermal carbonization, etc.)
  • Waste to Energy and Circular Economy
  • Energy valorization of sewage sludge (e.g. recovery of phosphorous)
  • Residues from waste to energy (e.g. bottom and fly ashes, off-gases,etc.)
  • Fuel upgrading (Products and processes used to refine fuels from alternative feedstocks - biomass, waste, biogas, ect.)
  • Developing countries (appropriate technologies / Specific developments / Political and financial perspectives)
  • Education, communication and social aspects (Minimisation and ecodesign / Participatory approaches and dispute management / Takeback programs / Recirculation pathways and markets / Waste and wastewater avoidance and management programs / Communication campaigns / Educational private and public projects
  • Economic aspects (e.g. capital and operational costs, revenues, financing)
  • Decision tools (e.g. lca, risk assessment, environmental impact assessment, sustainability achievement, energy and material balances)
  • Policies and legal aspects (e.g. regional, national and international approaches, eu strategies and directives, legal responsibilities)
  • Climate change and sink (CO2 credits, carbon balance, reduction of ghg, energy saving etc.)
  • Ecotoxicological aspects and health issues (e.g. occupational health, emissions and human exposition, epidemiological studies)
  • Public acceptance (e.g. information campaigns, public involvement, mediation and consensus)


Although the deadline for abstract submission to the conferences has already officially expired, abstracts on the above-mentioned subjects will still be reviewed for possible inclusion in the conference programme and publication on the journal.

Detritus – Multidisciplinary Journal for Waste Resources and Residues is currently indexed in SCOPUS, Google Scholar, DOAJ, ANVUR and in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) by Clarivate Analytics/Web of Science.

At the end of the peer review process, the accepted papers will be grouped in the most appropriate monographic special issue.
